Heating Season in Louisiana: What Northshore Homeowners Should Know Before the Cold Arrives

Why Heating Gets Ignored on the Northshore
Most homeowners in Hammond, Covington, Ponchatoula, and across the Northshore spend a lot of energy thinking about their AC — and for good reason. But heating? That's easy to put off when mild winters feel like a formality.
The problem is straightforward: because heating systems in South Louisiana run so infrequently compared to air conditioning, issues that develop during the off-season often go undetected until the first genuinely cold night. That's exactly when you need the heat to work.
Louisiana Winters Are Brief — But They're Real
The Northshore typically sees only a handful of weeks per year with temperatures that drop into the 30s or below. That's not a severe climate, but it's cold enough to cause real discomfort — and in some cases, property damage from frozen pipes — if your heating system fails when you need it.
Heat pumps, the most common heating setup in this part of Louisiana, are efficient in mild climates but can struggle during sharp cold snaps if maintenance has been deferred. A system that sat idle for eight or nine months may not perform the way it did last winter.
The Most Common Heating Systems on the Northshore
Understanding what type of system you have helps you know what to watch for.
Heat pumps are the default in most Northshore homes. They move heat rather than generate it, which makes them efficient in mild climates like ours. In many cases, the outdoor unit you rely on for cooling all summer is the same unit that heats your home in winter — which is exactly why a well-maintained heat pump matters year-round.
Gas or propane furnaces are less common in this area but still present, particularly in older homes or in rural parts of Tangipahoa and Livingston parishes. Furnaces require their own maintenance attention: heat exchanger inspection, burner condition, and filter care at minimum.
Ductless mini-splits also provide heat and are increasingly common on the Northshore for additions, converted spaces, and whole-home setups. The heating mode on a mini-split is worth testing before the season — not after the first cold snap.
Warning Signs Your Heating System Needs Attention
If your system shows any of the following, it's worth having a technician look before you actually need to rely on it:
- It takes noticeably longer to reach your set temperature than it did last winter
- You're hearing sounds you didn't notice before — grinding, persistent clicking, or an unusual hum when heat kicks on
- Airflow from the vents feels weaker than normal
- The system short-cycles — starts, runs briefly, and shuts off without warming the space
- Your energy bills during heating runs seem higher than comparable periods last year
- The system hasn't been serviced in over a year
None of these symptoms automatically means you need a replacement. But catching a small issue in October is nearly always less disruptive and less expensive than an emergency call in January.
A Few Things Homeowners Can Do Before the Season
While a professional inspection is the right move for most heating concerns, there are some straightforward steps any homeowner can take:
- Check and replace your air filter. A clogged filter restricts airflow and makes your system work harder in both heating and cooling mode.
- Test your system on a mild day. Switch to heat mode and confirm it runs. Don't wait for an actual cold night to find out something's off.
- Clear debris from your outdoor unit. Leaves and dirt accumulate during fall, especially in wooded areas around Folsom, Holden, and Loranger. Good airflow around the unit matters.
- Make sure vents are open and unobstructed. Furniture pushed against vents in a rarely-used room affects the whole system.
If you notice anything unusual during that test run, that's the right moment to schedule service — before temperatures drop and technician schedules fill up fast.
